Victoria’s Ogden Point piers are the busiest cruise terminals in Canada. Its Pier A had a particularly awkward corner to negotiate when vessels passed by the breakwater, or when warping on to the pier.
QuayQuip was brought in by the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority to design and a supply a fender system that could accommodate the 50,000 tons displacement cruise ship, the Norwegian Jewel. The challenge didn’t end just there; the brief was to provide 90 degrees of radial protection around an existing 15 foot radiused corner, and then ensure that the fender aligned with existing pier fendering.
The solution was in the form of 4 equispaced panels, all linked with hinges to harmonize the performance at varying impact angles. The outer 3 panels each had a pair of QCN900 cones, and the remaining inner panel had triple QCN700 cones to meet the pier fender line requirement.
The new corner protection fender from QuayQuip was installed at the end of March 2016, in time for Victoria’s annual cruise season.
